In their recently published State of Pentesting 2024 Report, Pentera provides insights into the current landscape of penetration testing and the trends shaping this crucial cybersecurity industry. Here are some key takeaways:

1. Increased Attack Frequency and Sophistication

The report highlights a concerning rise in the frequency and severity of cyberattacks, driven by the growing sophistication of threats and the exploitation of new vulnerabilities.

65% of organizations experienced at least one successful cyberattack in 2023.

The average cost of a data breach reached $9.41 million in 2023.

2. Automated Pentesting Gains Traction

In response to this evolving threat landscape, automated pentesting has become an increasingly important tool for organizations, enabling them to conduct security testing in a rapid, efficient, and scalable manner.

3. The Rise of Cloud Threats

With the growing adoption of cloud computing, threats to this environment have become a major concern for organizations.

68% of organizations have experienced at least one cloud security incident.

Cloud misconfigurations are the leading cause of cloud data breaches, accounting for 43% of cases.

6. The Importance of Vulnerability Management

The report underscores the importance of implementing an effective vulnerability management process to identify, prioritize, and remediate vulnerabilities in a timely manner.

Only 56% of organizations have a formalized vulnerability management process.

Organizations that implement an effective vulnerability management process experience a 70% reduction in the number of unpatched critical vulnerabilities.

7. Penetration Testing as a Risk Management Tool

Penetration testing has become an essential tool for risk management, enabling organizations to better understand their security posture and make informed decisions to mitigate cybersecurity risks.

By understanding current trends and emerging threats, organizations can effectively utilize penetration testing to identify and remediate vulnerabilities before they are exploited by cybercriminals.
