That same technology, however, is now an incredibly powerful tool for online scammers. The days of easily spotting fake emails by their typos and strange grammar are quickly disappearing. Industry data reveals generative AI allows criminals to craft perfectly written, personalized scams at a scale never seen before, making your old rules for spotting fakes obsolete.
You don’t need a technical degree to understand these new cybersecurity risks. The impact of AI on security affects you directly, but simple, actionable steps can help you spot the new tricks, protect your information, and use these amazing tools with confidence.
We’ve all learned to spot the classic scam email—the one from a supposed prince or a long-lost relative, riddled with typos and awkward phrasing. For years, those obvious mistakes were our first line of defense, a clear signal to hit delete without a second thought. That gut-check saved us from countless phishing attacks designed to steal our information.
But that defense is quickly becoming outdated. Scammers now use the same generative AI technology behind tools like ChatGPT to write phishing emails that are perfectly written, professional, and frighteningly personal. By feeding an AI public information from your LinkedIn or social media profiles, they can craft messages that reference your job, your colleagues, or recent projects, making a fake request feel incredibly legitimate. An AI-powered phishing attack doesn’t look like a sloppy scam; it looks like an email from someone who knows you.
Because of this, we have to change how we spot fakes. The new red flag isn’t bad grammar; it’s an unexpected or unusual request. If an email—no matter how polished—urgently asks you to click a strange link, transfer money, or buy gift cards, stop. The real question is no longer "Does this look professional?" but "Does this make sense?" This digital impersonation is just the beginning, as AI can now fake much more than text.
Beyond text, AI can create alarmingly convincing fake audio and video of real people. This technology, known as a “deepfake,” is a form of high-tech digital impersonation. Using just a small audio clip from a social media video or voicemail, a scammer can clone a person's voice and make it say anything they want. This elevates personalized attacks from faking a message to faking the person themselves.
Imagine getting a panicked phone call from a loved one. The voice sounds exactly like your child, spouse, or parent, claiming they're in trouble and desperately need you to wire them money. This is a common and cruel deepfake scam designed to exploit your emotions and bypass rational judgment. Because the voice is so familiar and the situation feels so urgent, your first instinct is to help immediately—which is exactly what scammers are counting on.
The best defense against this manipulation is simple but powerful. If you ever receive an urgent and unexpected call asking for money—even if the voice sounds real—hang up. Then, call that person back using the phone number you have saved for them. If it was a real emergency, they will answer. If it was a scam, you have just stopped an AI-powered trick in its tracks. While deepfakes use public data, another risk emerges from the private information we willingly feed into AI tools.
It’s tempting to use AI chatbots for everything, from summarizing meeting notes to drafting sensitive emails. But it’s crucial to remember how these tools learn. Think of a public AI like a parrot that listens to everything you tell it and might repeat it later to a total stranger. These systems absorb information to become smarter and don’t automatically distinguish between public facts and private secrets. Once you’ve shared something, you can’t take it back.
This "parrot" can't distinguish between you asking for a banana bread recipe and you pasting a confidential client list to be organized. If you input personal financial details, private passwords, or secret company strategies, that information can be stored and might resurface in an answer for another user. The AI isn’t malicious; it’s simply repeating what it learned from you. This creates a quiet but serious risk of leaking information you intended to keep private.
The golden rule is simple: never tell the AI parrot a secret you don’t want the world to hear. Beyond the data we provide, scammers also use AI's creative power to build entirely new threats from scratch, like harmful software and convincing fake news.

It can instantly generate thousands of unique, realistic-sounding articles, social media posts, and fake reviews to spread false narratives or manipulate public opinion. With such well-written and plentiful content, spotting what’s real and what’s fake becomes incredibly difficult.
With AI building both smarter malware and more believable lies, our old habit of trusting what we see and read online is no longer enough. The most important defense is developing a healthy dose of skepticism toward any surprising link, urgent message, or breaking news story from an unverified source.
